Caring for your Feather and Down and Wool Duvet

  • Prior to use – Upon removal from your packaging you should activate (fluff up) your feather and down duvets by shaking the duvet for a few minutes. Full lofting of the feather and down will usually occur within 24 hours. Your body warmth will enable it to loft even more.
  • General Care
    • Change the position of your duvet within the duvet cover with each duvet cover change.
    • To keep fillings evenly dispersed to ensure there are no cold spots, duvets should be plumped up by shaking regularly.
    • Duvets should be plumped up by shaking regularly.
    • Regularly airing your duvet will keep it fresh.
  • Always read the care label instructions prior to washing.
  • All our naturally-filled feather and down duvets are machine washable at 40°C in a large capacity machine.
  • All our naturally-filled wool duvets are machine washable at 30°C in a large capacity machine.
  • Non-biological detergent is recommended.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Make sure that your duvet is 100% dry before using to avoid clumping or ruining the filling.
  • Professional laundering is recommended.
  • Always store your freshly cleaned duvet in a breathable storage bag.
  • You should not store your duvet in a plastic bag.
  • After long periods of storage, you should shake your duvet to allow the duvet to re-loft to its original condition.
  • Airing your bed in the morning is a good habit to get into.
  • Keep your bed fresh by pulling back the duvet each morning to let your bed air before you make it. This allows the fibres to breathe and allows moisture to evaporate.
  • Use this as a chance to shake out your duvet to redistribute and puff up the filling.
  • Our feather and down duvets have a boxed construction, where the filling is held in each box allows an even distribution and prevents cold spots.
  • Always shake your natural duvet from the side, and not the bottom, to prevent the filling from moving between boxes.

A good quality natural duvet is an investment
Be sure to do what you can to extend the life of your duvet

Which Tog is Best for You?

Feather and Down Duvets

Summer Duvet – (4.5 tog – 6 tog)
  • You will be most comfortable with a lighter duvet in the summer.
  • We recommend a 4.5 tog or 6 tog, depending on how hot you get at night and how warm your bedroom is.
  • Duvet fill is an important factor in warm weather.
  • Natural fill duvets work really well as they will help you regulate your body temperature and wick away moisture for a fresher night’s sleep.
Spring Duvet – (10.5 tog)
  • If the weather is neither hot nor cold, go for a 10.5 mid-tog duvet.
  • Although, if you get hot in bed you may find a 4.5 tog – 6 tog duvet more comfortable.

 Autumn Duvet – (10.5 tog)

  • If the weather is neither hot nor cold, go for a 10.5 tog duvet. Because it can be difficult to judge the weather at this time of year, a duvet that helps with temperature regulation can be a dream come true.
  • We would recommend a 10.5 tog duvet, although if you get hot in bed you may find a 4.5 tog or 6 tog more comfortable.

 Winter Duvet – (13.5 tog)

  • Choose a higher tog for winter months.
  • Depending on how much you feel the cold and how chilly your home is, we would recommend a 13.5 tog duvet.

Wool Duvets

This is because wool fibres are self-regulating when it comes to insulation.

  • Summer                   Lightweight      (300gsm*)   tog equivalent 4-7 tog
  • Spring/Autumn      Medium weight (600gsm*)  tog equivalent 8-14 tog
  • Winter                       Lightweight and Medium weight (900gsm*) fastened together

(gsm* – grams of wool per square metre)

Caring for your Feather and Down and Wool Pillow

  • Prior to use – Upon removal from your packaging, you should give your pillow a few good shakes from end to end and side to side for a few minutes.
  • We recommend you use a natural pillow protector and wash it frequently (once a week would be advisable) in hot water. This cover will help to protect the natural materials from your body oils, perspiration and other soils which will help to extend the useful life of your pillow.
  • Always read the care label instructions prior to washing.
  • All our naturally-filled feather and down pillows are machine washable at 40°C in a large capacity machine.
  • All our wool pillows are machine washable at 30°C (wool cycle) in a large capacity machine.
  • Extra care should be taken if you wash your wool pillow as a whole.
  • Non-biological detergent is recommended.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Make sure that your pillow is 100% dry before using to avoid clumping or ruining the filling.
  • Professional laundering is recommended.
  • Natural fillings require gentle care to maximise their longevity.
  • Always store your freshly cleaned pillow in a breathable storage bag.
  • You should not store your pillow in a plastic bag.

A good quality pillow is an investment

Did You Know?

  • Your head weighs 4.5 – 5.5 kilos (10-12lb)?
  • Your neck contains 7 of the spine’s 33 vertebrae?
  • If you have neck pain, a stiff neck, suffer from headaches then this may be as a result of poor pillow support whilst sleeping.
  • Poor pillow support can also cause narrowing of the air pipe, resulting in obstructed breathing, and sometimes snoring, which can hinder sleep.
And ……. can often cause arguments!
  • If the height of the pillow is too high or low when sleeping, your neck is bent abnormally out of alignment, causing muscle and joint strain. You can even wake with headaches.
  • A good pillow should hold your head, neck and spine in correct alignment whilst sleeping.
  • The human neck curves slightly forward (to sustain the weight of the head when upright), and it is very important to maintain this curve when in a resting position.
  • No matter what position you lie in, the pillow should be under your head, but not your shoulders, and should be a thickness that allows your head to be in a normal position.
  • A pillow that is too soft will allow the head to flop, curving the neck.
  • A pillow that is too hard will give you a crick in the neck.
  • It is preferable to sleep on your back and on your side.
  • If possible, avoid sleeping on your tummy as this puts a lot of strain on your neck as your neck is permanently twisted throughout the night.
  • A naturally filled (feather and down and wool) breathable pillow is the perfect choice. These natural materials help regulate your body and keep it at the optimum temperature whilst you sleep.
  • Pillows affect your sleeping posture, so it is important to have a good quality pillow.
  • It is recommended that you change your pillow every 1 – 2 years (depending on how it has been maintained) for a healthy sleeping environment.
  • It is time to change your pillow if:
    • You have any of the above issues.
    • The internal supportive materials have broken down.
    • When your pillow has lost its loft (height).
    • When your pillow becomes lumpy.
    • When your pillow becomes discoloured.
    • Your pillow is old and unwashed.
  • Old and unwashed pillows could also contain as much as 10% of its weight in skin scale mould, dead and living dust mites and their allergen laden droppings!
  • If that’s not what you want to cuddle up to at night, then

It’s definitely time to change your pillow!

Caring for your Mattress Topper:

Feather and Down & Wool Mattress Topper

  • Prior to use – Upon removal from your packaging you should shake your Mattress Topper for a few minutes. We recommend you allow it to air for 24hrs before use.
  • General Care
    • We recommend you protect your Mattress Topper with a natural mattress protector. If you do have any accidental spills then it is far easier to wash the mattress protector.
    • We recommend you give your mattress topper a good shake once a week.
    • We recommend you rotate your mattress topper once a week. This will allow the filling to redistribute and help it to bounce back.
    • Allow your bed to air daily.
  • Always read the care label instructions prior to washing.
  • All our Mattress Toppers are machine washable at 30°C in a large capacity machine. However, due to the size we would recommend professional laundering.
  • Non-biological detergent is recommended.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Make sure that your Mattress Topper is 100% dry before using to avoid clumping or ruining the filling.
  • Professional laundering is recommended.
  • Always store your freshly cleaned Mattress Topper in a breathable storage bag. You should not store it in a plastic bag. After long periods of storage, you should shake your mattress topper to allow it to re-loft to its original condition.
  • Airing your bed in the morning is a good habit to get into. Keep your bed fresh by pulling back the duvet each morning to let your bed air before you make it. This allows the fibres to breathe and allows moisture to evaporate. Use this as a chance to shake out your Mattress Topper to redistribute and puff up the filling.

– Hästens Mattress Topper

  • Your Hästens Mattress Topper should not be washed, laundered or dry cleaned. It is made using the highest quality, 100% natural materials.
  • Spot cleaning of stains (if required) can be done with a good textile cleaner or furniture foam.
  • There is a small risk the cleaner could discolour the fabric or damage the natural minerals solution that makes the mattress topper fire retardant.
  • Therefore we recommend you firstly test a small area on an unobtrusive section of the mattress topper.
  • For ultimate protection we would highly recommend you protect your Hästens Mattress Topper with a Quilted Mattress Protector. https://www.thenaturalbeddingcompany.com/shop/mattress-toppers/mattress-protectors-coming-soon/

  • Unpacking your Mattress Topper – Gently shake and stretch the mattress topper once you have unpacked it.
  • This will help to return it to its proper shape following packaging and shipment.
  • When you first open your mattress topper you may notice a slight scent from the natural materials.
  • This is quite normal and will decrease over time.
  • You can accelerate this process by airing your mattress topper for a while before putting it on your bed.
  • You should air your mattress topper by simply removing the bed linen and allowing it to air.
  • Turning and Rotating your Mattress Topper – For optimum use, turn and rotate your mattress topper every 6 – 12 weeks.
  • This will ensure that a larger part of the sleeping surface is adjusting to your body and sleeping positions.
  • Massaging your Mattress Topper – Periodic massages will help to retain the comfort of your mattress topper.
  • You can do this by rolling the corners to the centre and then back again.
  • Give it also a good shake from time to time.

A good quality Mattress Topper is an investment
